3 California
(Sp. model spelled same [kalifórnja]; originally the name of an island in a Spanish romantic poem Las Sergas de Esplandián, written by Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo; the name is possibly a blend of the word caliph and the names of Spanish cities such as Calahorra. When Spanish explorers discovered Baja California, they assumed it was an island and called it California. The territory that is now the state of California was known as Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule)1) The thirty-first state in the Union. It became part of the United States in 1850.2) Northwestern Texas: 1933. The DARE references california as a verb meaning to throw an animal by catching it with a rope around its neck and flank and tripping it with one's foot. A method used especially for large and unmanageable calves. Not referenced in Spanish sources.3) An attributive adjective used in many combinations to denote animals (such as the California condor, California jay, California lion, California quail, California yellowtail, etc.), plants (California beeplant, California laurel, California lilac, California nutmeg, California sidesaddle flower), and items particular to California's history. The terms that are pertinent to the cowboy's era or trade are listed below. -

7 palo verde
(Sp. model spelled same [pálo] [see above] and [pérSe] < Latin viridis 'green')Carlisle: 1901. A tree with bright yellow flowers ( Cercidium microphyllus) native to arid regions of the Southwest, especially Arizona and California. Referenced by Santamaría as the chumari plant of Sinaloa, Mexico, which is similar to the jaboncillo and is sometimes called by that name. It may also refer to a leguminous plant ( Parkinsonia aculeata) or to the Cercidium peninsulare, native to Baja California. A rosaceous plant called guayule or palo prieto may also be called by this name. In the American Southwest it is also known as retama, lluvia de oro 'rain of gold'. Along with chaparral, mesquite, cacti, and other typical plants, the palo verde is often featured in desert backdrops in western films. -
8 garbancillo
(Sp. model spelled same [garßansíjo] < Spanish garbanzo 'chickpea' < Mozarabic arvango 'chickpea' plus the diminutive - illo)Kansas: 1887; Texas: 1970. Referenced in the DARE as "a milk vetch," including the Astragalus mollissimus and the A. wootonii. Santamaría glosses it as a bush ( Brongniartia parryi) that grows on the Mexican altiplano. In Baja California, the name garbancillo de buey is given to the A. leucopis. Cobos references garbancillo as locoweed.Alternate form: garbanzilla. -
9 teguas
(Sp. model spelled same [tégwas] < Náhuatl tehuan 'that which accompanies others')Bentley: 1889. Originally, lightweight rawhide ankle-length moccasins that lace in the front. Santamaría indicates that this term may be spelled various ways in Mexico ( teguas, tejas, tejuanas, texas), and refers to a nation of Indians that inhabit Baja California and New Mexico (in English, Tewa). The term was subsequently generalized to other footwear, such as huarache sandals used by the Indians. The sandals are now worn by others besides the Tewa Indians and the term is known throughout northwestern Mexico. Sobarzo indicates that the sandals were worn by the Apaches. He suggests that the name comes from a Sonoran Indian language, possibly from the Cahita word begua 'leather; calfskin.' Islas notes that the sandals are worn principally by peasants, especially those in Chihuahua, Mexico. -
